Umbrella or bikini?
During our recent beach vacation we were struck by another cultural difference.

This is the Thai way of spending a day at the beach - fully clothed, sitting in a group under a cluster of umbrellas with a table full of food.

At the other end of the modesty and skin-cancer spectrum...the white (mostly European) tourists. We were amazed at the number of elderly, overweight Caucasians who showed off their rolls of burned belly fat. To the Thais these people would be seen as lacking both morals and common sense.

Interesting - the slim Thais at a table full of food. The not so slim foreigners exercising on the beach.
I'm sure you were culturally sensitive during your visit.

Great commentary! Shows the silliness of the Western way of beaching, though it also seems a little pointless to go get sandy, if all you want to do is sit under an umbrella and eat--why not stay at home? I'm sure you all found a happy medium!

I was telling Freds and Dels about the Thai swimming suits, and how modest the women are ! The men were a bit different than American men however, so keep a watch on these guys when they come OK?
